Description
The introduction to this cd reads:
‘We sing for Labor and we sing for Peace.
We are tired of one party rule and endless war.
This collection of songs was created to light
a fire under, or rekindle the flame of, people
working for freedom, fair elections and Peace.’
Fine words indeed, which the contents of this splendid cd more than do justice to. In fact this is one of the most enjoyable and moving recordings we have come across for sometime.
The Hail To The Thieves series, has been instigated by US political folk singers and activists George Mann and Julius Margolin and features a fine crop of folk singers united in their rejection of George Bush and his cohorts. Some of the musicians featured here can be found elsewhere on the Four Dogs Site (Utah Phillips, Anne Feeney, our own Billy Bragg, and George and Julius themselves), some we hadn’t come across before.
But collectively they offer a principled and immensely inspiring alternative to the Bush years in America and beyond.
The music is first class and varied, covering folk, country and gospel and there are so many stand out tracks, its impossible to choose some without neglecting others, so we won’t. But the great Utah Phillips finishes proceedings off in fine style with Ship Gonna Sail.
