Talking Union - The Almanac Singers
Product Description
Hats off to the Naxos label for bringing out this cd, one of the finest recordings on our site. The Almanac Singers were formed in 1940 by Pete Seeger, playwright Lee Hays, actor Millard Lampell and featured Woody Guthrie at times. Their songs were a celebration of peace and pacifism, workers in struggle, and the whole recording is imbued with decency.
A strong sense of history shines out from the 21 tracks, interesting to note the change of attitude from pacifism to the backing of the war against nazi Germany once Hitler invaded Russia ( see Dear Mr President and Round And Round Hitler’s Grave).
This cd contains some of the very finest protest songs ever written and recorded, Talking Union and ‘C’ For Conscription being amongst our favourites. The music is a mix of folk and early country, the singing and performing always of the highest calibre, but the Almanac Singers never took themselves too seriously, great warmth and humour are very evident.
SORRY, SOLD OUT.
