Ain't No Whiskey - Melissa Ruth And The Likely Stories

£8.95 (£7.46 ex. vat)
With simmering songs and smoldering vocals, Ain't No Whiskey, the latest offering from songwriter Melissa Ruth, sets out to burn the house down. Dubbed, Doo-Wop Twang, Melissa's music is a rooted mix of Americana, folk, and blues. Her family band, The Likely Stories, includes her husband, blues guitarist Johnny Leal and his brother, drummer Jimmy Leal.

Inspired in large part by her experiences teaching in rural Oregon during the recent American recession, Ruth says of the album: "the songs are about travel or transition, almosts and maybes. Everyone is looking for something: love, acceptance, peace, happiness. The idea behind Ain't No Whiskey is that there are no quick fixes for feelings of longing and desire."

Ruth was born and raised in rural British Columbia. Currently, she writes, records, teaches, and performs throughout North America.

As a music listener and a musician, I find Melissa Ruth's newest album, "Ain't No Whiskey," to be the cream of the crop. Melissa's sultry, soulful vocals paired with Johnny Leal's smooth lead guitar are the best that Americana music has to offer. Melissa Ruth's music has been gaining in popularity in the United States and will no doubt keep you Brits warm at night, too.

    Doowop Twang Indeed!

From the first funky groove and haunting strains of the title track, Ain't No Whisky, this collection of quirky musical stories is captivating. I popped the cd into my car deck (yes, my car and I are that old) and there it played for three days, over and again, as I made my 2 hour drive to and from work. It quickly became one of my favourite cd's. Melissa's dusky vocals and Johhny's tasteful, toneful guitar licks, are perfectly balanced between the intelligent lyrics, and solid rythmn section, painting unforgetable word pictures. A totally satisfying listen from start to finish!
